Bone density testing is the primary way physicians diagnosis and treat osteoporosis (bone loss). Both men and women should be tested.
Women can lose up to 20% of their bone mass in the first five to seven years after menopause, while men tend to develop osteoporosis later in life. Osteoporosis frequently is not accompanied by any symptoms. For this reason, some patients are not aware they have osteoporosis until they break a bone.
