Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation – Pain Management
Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation includes a sub-specialty called Physiatry, which deals with the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of disorders that produce pain, impairment and disability.The physiatrists at North Shore Physician Group Neurosurgery and Spine work with patients to decrease their pain, enhance performance and restore maximum function in their activities of daily living without surgery. They create rehabilitation plans that help patients stay as active as possible at any age.
The three major areas of medical care are:
Diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal injuries and pain syndromes
These include sports and/or work injuries to degenerative conditions as common as arthritis or low back pain.
Electrodiagnostic medicine
Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation is the only specialty of medicine in which special training in electromyography (EMG) and nerve conduction studies is required. These procedures are used for evaluation of various neurological disorders.
Rehabilitation of post operative patients with impairments
The physiatrist directs a comprehensive rehabilitation team of professionals that may include physical therapists, occupational therapists, rehabilitation nurses, psychologists and social workers.
